Tagbilaran City Profile

Tagbilaran started as a small settlement of natives who wore by the spirit of Anito the pagan god, dating back as early as 15th century, known as "Bo-ol" or "Dapitan"Kingdom, in the vicinity of Lower Mansasa. The early settlers were peace-loving and simple in ways, husky in build and generally tall. They had already their own political, social and economic system which was ruled by Datu and established trade relations with China and Malaysia. Spanish Captain General Miguel Lopez de Legaspi landed on March 16, 1565 and forged the historical treaty of friendship with local chieftain Datu Sikatuna in the famous Blood Compact, the first international treaty of friendship between Filipinos and foreigners and considered the greatest event that took place in the City of Tagbilaran and the Province of Bohol. It became the forerunner of the city's traditional celebration of "Sandugo". On July 1, 1966, by virtue of Republic Act No. 4660, Tagbilaran was carved out from the Province of Bohol to become a chartered city.
